About Dashwood House

Built in the American Craftsman style with western ranch/lodge and Olde English influences, this solid residence is as cozy and functional as it is exceptional. The home provides ample room for entertaining in balance with more private areas where your family can truly relax and rejuvenate surrounded by beauty and tranquility.

Sited in a meadow on a long bend in the river, Dashwood House is oriented to take maximum advantage of the majestic San Juan Mountain view to the south, and the protective, sheer canyon walls towering over the Uncompahgre River to the east.

The home is a timber-frame or post-and-beam structure built from massive salvaged Douglas fir timbers. The flooring is recovered southern yellow pine from an eastern woolen mill built in the 1840s. The bricks were salvaged from a century-old warehouse, and the stone was quarried near the ranch itself.

This home is called Dashwood House in honor of the owner’s late wife. Dashwood was Joan Kontny’s middle name and traces its lineage back to the England of the 1100s. The inglenook near the great room fireplace features the Dashwood family coat of arms fashioned in stained glass.
